CBRM GENERAL

As of March 16, 2020 Municipal buildings are closed to the public until further notice.


CAPE BRETON TRANSIT *Schedule changes effective March 23*

CB Transit continues to provide this essential service while responding to changes related to COVID-19. Please check frequently for updates to services and schedules.

CB Transit is now limiting the number of patrons on regular service as well as handi-trans to meet social distancing requirements. This may result in delays and increased waiting periods.

Patrons are to practice social distancing and keep approximately 2 meters from transit drivers at all times without exception.

Handi-trans continues to be available through the regular booking service, operating by appointment.

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT

CBRM Planning & Development will now be accepting Building/Development Permits and Subdivision applications by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Building/Development Permit Applications must include attached electronic drawings, plans, site plan, location certificate, and approvals from outside agencies, if necessary (Nova Scotia Environment and Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal). Associated fees will be added to the tax account on the property until further notice.

Subdivision Applications must include Statement of Registration and an electronic copy of the subdivision plan. Associated fees will be invoiced to the Surveyor.

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may experience delays in approvals with new measures and possible disruptions with outside agencies.

Building Inspections

Building inspections are available to be scheduled with the following protocol:

  • All interaction regarding inspections, documentation, booking, review, etc., will be conducted electronically, digitally and/or by phone.
  • Builders are to monitor on-site workers and follow the COVID19 Information Kit recommendations for prevention. To schedule an inspection, please provide the following information:
    • Has anyone who has been on site travelled out of province in the last 14 days?
    • Is there anyone who has been on the site currently in self or imposed isolation?
    • Will the site be empty?
  • All inspection sites are required to be vacated at the time of inspection. Social distancing procedures as recommended by the Federal and Provincial Health Authority`s shall be observed.
  • Any inspection site that is “occupied” with or without a permit, will have inspections deferred indefinitely.

CITIZEN SERVICE CENTRE SERVICES / TAX AND WATER BILLING

Tax & Water Bills can continue to be paid by mailing a cheque, CBRM’s website via paymentus, online banking or at any financial institution.

Customers seeking to pay on accounts other than tax and water can pay by cheque processed through regular mail to:

Department staff are working remotely to assist customers with account inquiries and related issues including address changes, pre-authorized payments, billing inquiries, tax certificates, and other information on taxes and service rates.

Tax Sale scheduled for March 26 is postponed to June.

Deadline for applications is extended to April 30.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

All solid waste management sites will be closed to the general public as of March 24, 2020 until further notice. Only current registered IC&I users and vehicles carrying out CBRM curbside collection will have access to the sites.

The Sites included in these restrictions are:
1. CBRM Waste Management Facility SPAR RD
2. Transfer Station - 715 SPAR Rd
3. Camdon Recycling Ltd. 345 Gulf Crescent, Sydport Industrial Park
4. CBRM’s Residential Hazardous Waste Depot 345 Gulf Crescent, Sydport Industrial Park

CURBSIDE COLLECTION:

CBRM’s curbside collection program will continue as regularly scheduled in the 2019-2020 Curbside Collection Calendar. Please continue to place your materials curbside on your scheduled collection day. As well, collectors will be making allowances for any extra bags that may be placed curbside.

HEAVY GARBAGE COLLECTION:

CBRM’s Heavy Garbage Collection has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. Please DO NOT place any heavy garbage out to the curb for collection.

Waste Reduction Educators have started to work remotely and will respond to all inquiries left on voicemail. Educators will be available to respond to all voicemail messages Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 4:00pm.

RECREATION 

All Provincial and CBRM municipal parks are closed to all. All travel into those parks is strictly prohibited.

Provincial and CBRM Walking Tracks, Walking Paths and Trails remain open for exercise.Walk/exercise within your neighbourhood only. The walking tracks and paths listed below are currently maintained by the municipality.

These trails and paths are open to those who can access them from their homes. Do not drive to trails.

Provincial restrictions on gathering limits and social distancing guidelines must be followed.

The Coxheath Hills and Baille Ard trails are both closed by directive of their associations.
