Youth-focused council meeting to stream live online

SYDNEY, NS – Cape Breton Regional Municipality's youth meeting on Tuesday night, November 26, will be streamed live online via the CBRM website at www.cbrm.ns.ca.

The live streaming is part of the technology upgrades in the council chamber completed this year.

New: Online expenses improve transparency

SYDNEY, NS – Mayor Cecil Clarke's Reorganization Plan for Positive Change will have a Year One update next week, but one item that will be added in the coming year is that the Mayor's travel and meeting expenses will be posted online monthly.

"Open transparent governance requires open, transparent disclosure of the use of public funds to advance our community's strategic interests," said Clarke.

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality's younger residents are being encouraged to re-imagine the future of their communities and articulate their vision to council.

As part of the Mayor and Council's Reorganization Plan for Positive Change, special meetings of council will be designated as focused on youth and youth-related issues. The first meeting will be held at the Civic Centre on Tuesday, November 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Mayor welcomes Canada-EU trade agreement

Clarke touts advantages of Port of Sydney for free trade with Europe

SYDNEY, NS - The Port of Sydney is ideally positioned for Atlantic Gateway opportunities related to the historic free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union says Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Cecil Clarke.

"We are the home of the most eastern mainland deepwater port in North America and that's a special advantage when it comes to increased movement of goods to and from Europe," said Clarke.
Clarke discussed the new trade agreement in recent days with regional minister Hon. Peter MacKay and Transport Canada minister Hon. Lisa Raitt.

SYDNEY, NS - Mayors from across the Atlantic Provinces will gather in Sydney on October 16th to 18th to discuss issues facing municipalities in Atlantic Canada.

The Atlantic Mayors' Congress is committed to improving municipal government and developing a strong, unified voice to advocate for municipalities in the Atlantic Provinces. More than 20 mayors are expected to attend.

Task Force public meeting date moved to October 1

SYDNEY, NS - SYDNEY, NS - The public meeting on the Mayor's Task Force recommendations will be held in the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre in Sydney.

Use of the upgraded chamber requires a date change however, so the meeting will now be held on Tuesday, October 1 at 1:30 pm. It was originally scheduled for September 17.

The task force, chaired by Dr. Keith Brown of CBU, presented a blueprint for change across a broad spectrum of the organization and operation of Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Planning and design company chosen for Sydney harbourfront

SYDNEY, NS – Ekistics Planning and Design have been chosen to develop a compelling conceptual vision plan for the future development of the harbourfront in both downtown Sydney and its north end neighbourhood for a 25 year horizon.

A request for proposals issued in May identified the need for a strategic approach for a study area bounded by the Esplanade and Sydney harbour from Wentworth Park to the tip of the north end peninsula.The successful proposal, submitted by Ekistics in collaboration with their partners, Eastpoint Engineering and Cantwell & Company Consulting, combines landscape architecture, civil engineering and municipal planning.

Boil Water Advisory lifted for Sydney system

The Boil Water Advisory for customers on the Sydney water supply has been lifted.

The boil advisory was announced on Tuesday following test results that showed the presence of bacteria in one of 21 water samples taken in Sydney on Monday.

Greg Penney, Operations Manager of the Water Utility advises that two clear sample results have been received from the lab and customers are no longer required to boil their water.

Mayor welcomes Premier's commitment to seawall project

SYDNEY, NS – CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke welcomed the news today that the Government of Nova Scotia will participate in a cost-sharing proposal to repair the Gabarus seawall.

Today's announcement by Premier Dexter completes the funding plan proposed by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in June. On July 24, the federal government announced they could contribute up to $300,000 toward the project.
