Emergency preparedness week highlights ongoing Fiona-related risks

May 8, 2023

SYDNEY, NS -  Emergency preparedness week is May 7-13. This year’s theme is “Be Prepared. Know your Risks.”  CBRM Emergency Management is requesting attention and awareness from residents about emergency preparedness, especially the risks posed by wildfire.

To help our community better prepare for emergencies, CBRM Emergency Management has created a series of short videos, located on the CBRM YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/cbrmgov) covering various Emergency Preparedness topics including Before an Emergency, During an Emergency, and After an Emergency.  Each video contains links to valuable emergency preparedness resources in the video description.  An additional video on Community Risk Reduction-Wildland Fires and Hurricane Fiona highlights the importance of wildfire prevention, especially with the increased risk created by the damage to our wildlands from Hurricane Fiona last September.

“We’re encouraging Nova Scotians to learn more about the risks that affect our region, such as floods, wildfires and hurricanes, and the actions you can take to protect your family and property,” said Bruce MacDonald, CBRM’s Manager of Emergency Management.

The CBRM Facebook page and website includes an important community safety message to alert the public to the risks of wildfire, tips on wildfire prevention and mitigation, and a “like and share” contest to help spread this important message.

To further this message, CBRM Emergency Management will meet with residents this week at two community meetings in Port Morien and Louisbourg to provide information on community risk reduction for wildfires. The meeting in Louisbourg is on Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Louisbourg VFD and the Port Morien meeting is 7:30 pm on Wednesday at the Port Morien VFD.

On Wednesday, May 10 at 1:55 pm there will be a test of the Public Emergency Alert System.  The emergency alert system will be tested on TV, radio and cell phones. Visit http://alertready.ca for more information on the emergency alert system.
