CBRM CELEBRATES NOVA SCOTIA HERITAGE DAY WITH EVENT AT CENTRE 200

February 1, 2023

SYDNEY, NS - With the coldest days of the year fast approaching, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Recreation Department is bringing some heat to the midwinter month with a community event celebrating Nova Scotia Heritage Day on Monday, February 20.

The event will recognize the groundbreaking contributions of 2023 Nova Scotia Heritage Day Honouree, Elder Rita Joe. Taking place both indoors and outdoors at Centre 200, a combination of music, games, performances, and ways to get active will be on site from 12-5 p.m.  Elder Rita Joe of We’koqma’q First Nation was instrumental in paving the way for other Mi’kmaq authors. A residential school survivor, her greatest wish was to see more writings come from her people and “that the children would read it.” A member of the Order of Canada and the Queen’s Privy Council, Elder Rita’s writings worked to change the negative attitudes encountered in her life’s journey.

Starting with the “Poems of Rita Joe,” Elder Rita celebrated Mi’kmaq culture and language in her writings which include “Song of Eskasoni,” “Kelusiltiek,” and her most famous work “I Lost My Talk.”

An official Nova Scotia Heritage Day community celebration of the life and works of Rita Joe will be held on Thursday, February 16, from 5-8PM at Allison Bernard Memorial High School in Eskasoni with all welcome to attend.

On the ice, Centre 200 will welcome two cohorts of 100 for free skates at 12PM and 1PM. All participants must wear skates and a helmet while on the ice surface. Due to the limited capacity, registration for the free skate is taking place at cbrmrecreation.ca. In the Centre 200 concourse, a variety of performances and activities will be taking place throughout the afternoon. There will be a photo booth, virtual reality (VR) games from Soulvaria, a VR pod and VR roller coaster, and performances from Duncan Wells & the Apple in a Tree Band, magician Carmen Giorno, and glow dancers Serpentine Studios.

Free hot chocolate and cider will also be served while supply lasts. The back lot of Centre 200 will be alive with entertainment and activity throughout the afternoon as well. There will be tube sliding on a sliding hill created for the event (weather permitting), archery with John’s Archery, mini curling, inflatable slide and dance dome, and a mobile games room featuring Playstation 5, Xbox One, and Wii-U games. In addition, there will be live music on the Makin’ Waves Winter Stage featuring Eskasoni rockers The Wendigos and Glace Bay indie pop ground Avalon & the Pyramids amongst others.

The event is free to attend with some elements having registration or lineups to participate. The event is rain or shine, with some elements weather dependent.

Please dress appropriately for the forecasted weather. For updates, follow @cbrmgov on Facebook and Instagram.
