CBRM firefighters headed to National FireFit Championships

Sydney, NS – Firefighters from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality won gold medals at the Atlantic FireFit Championships in Summerside, PEI this past weekend. All gold medal winners for each category automatically qualify to compete at the 2016 National Championships in September in Spruce Meadows, Alberta.
The FireFit Championships is a competition based on firefighting tasks commonly performed in emergency situations.
CBRM firefighters brought home three gold medals. Kylie Ballah won the gold medal in the female competition with a time of 3:07. Kylie Ballah and Todd Ballah also won the gold for the mixed two-person relay competition with a time of 2:13.
David Witzell, Scott MacKenzie, Kylie Ballah and Todd Ballah won the gold medal for the mixed relay with a time of 1:34.
Out of more than 100 competitors, CBRM firefighters placed in the top half with their individual results. Scott MacKenzie with a time of 1:42 took 16th place overall, Todd Ballah with a time of 1:55 took 34th place overall, Dave Witzell with a time of 2:08 took 47th place overall and Scott MacKenzie and Dave Witzell had a time of 1:50 in the FireFit X3 relay.
Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Cecil Clarke, Council and staff congratulated their Fire and Emergency Services colleagues who performed so well in competition.
“The hard work and training of our firefighters has paid off with these well-deserved awards,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke. “They have done a great job representing our municipality and we wish them good luck at Nationals in September.”
