Citizens are invited to first Port of Sydney annual general meeting

SYDNEY, NS - The first Port of Sydney annual general meeting will be held at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion on Saturday, March 12. The event begins with an open house information session from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a business meeting featuring financial statements.

Topics presented at the open house include: cruise activity projections and updates on the second berth project to expand Sydney’s Cruise Terminal to accommodate up to three cruise ships at one time. Our region’s proposal for designation as a Foreign Trade Zone will be presented as well as information on the marketing and development of a proposed deep-water container terminal at the Port of Sydney.

On April 1, 2015, the Sydney Ports Corporation was dissolved and a new organization was formed. The new organization, the Port of Sydney Development Corporation, has a wide development mandate and is accountable to the public. The board is chaired by CBRM’s Chief Administrative Officer and is comprised of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and three members of council. The Port of Sydney CEO is Marlene Usher.

“The March 12 AGM will look back on the successful year that is just concluding and look forward to the promising year ahead,” said Port of Sydney board chair Michael Merritt, the Chief Administrative Officer of CBRM.

As part of the incorporation of the new Port of Sydney Development Corporation, a publicly accountable organization, an open general meeting must be held annually.
