Community Engagement Launched for Economic Development and Municipal Planning Strategy

April 9, 2021

SYDNEY, NS – The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) and the Cape Breton Partnership are pleased to announce CBRM Forward, a new and collaborative approach to Economic Development and Municipal Planning.

CBRM Forward is a three phased, two year process. An Economic Development Strategy and Growth Management Strategy will be developed in the first phase, with the second phase providing an update to the Municipal Planning Strategy, and the third phase undertaking updates to enabling by-laws including the Land Use (Zoning) and Subdivision By-laws.

This set of strategies presents an important opportunity to develop a unified vision for the future of the community.

“A meaningful consultation and outreach and a really thoughtful process will be undertaken over a good time span of two years,” said Mayor Amanda McDougall. “I’m looking forward to the creative collaboration process and the outcomes that will come from it.”

CBRM and the Cape Breton Partnership will be working together to engage residents, business owners, community groups, developers, and investors to build an integrated approach to  Community Planning and Economic Development that is accountable to the community’s priorities.

“We are proud to work with the CBRM and its residents to focus on economic recovery”, says Carla Arsenault, President and CEO of the Cape Breton Partnership. “This work will prepare us for inclusive growth and success, and will also promote to the world that Cape Breton-Unama’ki is a dynamic, progressive and attractive location for our current and future citizens to live, work, study and invest.”

CBRM and the Cape Breton Partnership will be seeking input through the online engagement platform at www.cbrmforward.ca.

This platform will serve as the hub of information throughout the project. In-person engagement events will be begin in July of 2021, in accordance with public health guidelines. We look forward to moving CBRM Forward together.
