Councillor Charlie Keagan mourned by council and CBRM colleagues
Tonight's council meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled
SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality's council are mourning the loss of their colleague Charlie Keagan. Keagan suffered a heart attack recently and further complications this morning led to his passing at around 2:00 pm.
"We are very saddened by the loss of our council colleague," said Mayor Cecil Clarke. "Charlie was a grassroots, community-focused leader who devoted many years of his life to public service. His wisdom and strength of character will be greatly missed."
Out of respect for Councillor Keagan, council will postpone tonight's scheduled meeting to a later date. Flags at city hall are being lowered to half-mast.
Charlie Keagan served for 16 years as a councillor and as a deputy mayor for the former town of North Sydney. A former Marine Atlantic employee, Keagan also served on the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board. He was elected to CBRM council in November of 2012.
"On behalf of council and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, I extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Charlie's wife Bernadette and his family," said Clarke.
