Dates set for public budget consultation meetings across CBRM

February 10, 2014

SYDNEY, NS – Residents of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are welcome to participate in budget consultation meetings as part of the municipality's 2014-15 budget process.

There will be a public meeting held in each of the 12 districts. Mayor Cecil Clarke and each district's councillor will attend the meetings along with key CBRM staff.

The consultation will also include public opinion survey questions and a stakeholder session in Council Chambers on March 11.

The public budget meetings were initiated last year as part of the CBRM's Reorganization Plan for Positive Change.

Mayor Clarke says the budget consultation process is critical for prioritizing municipal spending choices.

"Residents were clear in our last meetings about focusing on economic development," said Mayor Clarke. "These meetings are an opportunity to look at our limited tax dollars and consider how our priorities help develop our economy and create jobs."

During last year's consultation, residents ranked "working with the federal and provincial governments" at the top followed closely by development of the Port of Sydney, attracting large employers and increasing tourism activity.

The budget is expected to be finalized and ready for presentation to council by the end of March.

If bad weather requires a meeting to be rescheduled, all cancellation and reschedule information will be available on the CBRM website at www.cbrm.ns.ca

Stakeholder groups must pre-register for the March 11 session at Council Chambers by calling the Clerk's Office at 563-5010 or emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Please register by March 5.
