Flooding Assistance for Nova Scotians Continues

Government remains committed to ensuring that Nova Scotians impacted by the Oct. 10 floods receive the help they need.

Families who cannot return to their homes continue to be supported by Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) with funding for temporary accommodation as their disaster financial assistance claims are processed.

CBRM is phasing out its help line effective today, Nov. 4. Residents can still get information and assistance by:
–- visiting novascotia.ca/flooding for important links and information
–- calling 1-866-424-5620 or emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for disaster financial assistance
–- contacting 211 to access funding for urgent or other community support needs related to the storm. Emergency funding will continue to be disbursed through the United Way and Salvation Army.

"I appreciate that this is a stressful time for the impacted residents and the province is doing everything we can to assist homeowners through this process," said Zach Churchill, Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office. "Staff are working hard to complete claims as quickly as possible and help people rebuild their lives after this devastating flood.

"If anyone has an immediate need like food or clothing or questions about disaster financial assistance, I encourage them to reach out to 211."

To date, the disaster financial assistance program has received 249 applications. People can apply until February 2017.

Mr. Churchill also thanked the CBRM staff who answered more than 2,300 calls on the help line in the past three weeks. While the help line is being phased out, the municipality will follow up with anyone who has called for assistance.

People who called CBRM following the flood still need to apply directly with the province for disaster financial assistance. Application forms are available online at novascotia.ca/flooding, and at Access Nova Scotia, CBRM city hall, and MLA offices.
