Major upgrade to Munro Park now underway

June 3, 2016

NORTH SYDNEY, NS – Construction has begun on major upgrades to the playing field at North Sydney’s Munro Park. Munro Park took first place in the 2015 Kraft Project Play online contest, winning $250,000 to rebuild the soccer field.

Kraft’s Project Play is a competition to provide funding to upgrade play facilities in communities across Canada.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality owns the park and is seeking partnerships with the federal and provincial governments for new investments in seating, storage and playground areas to complement the work underway on the field.

The Mayor thanked the Northside Soccer Association, and organizers Angela Hull and Sandy Cantwell-Kerr, for their hard work.

“Northside Soccer’s accomplishment has made a very positive impact in terms of revitalizing this park,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke. “A new generation of children and their families will be able to enjoy this soccer field and park and for that they deserve many thanks.”

Local contractor Northern Contracting Limited will be working with local landscaping contractor Highland Landscapes for Lifestyles to ensure a top quality playing field for the community.

“The Munro Park project gives NCL an opportunity to give back to our community. We are honored to be a part of this project in the community that our employees served and lived in for over 20 years,” said Sheldon Marinelli, owner of Northern Contracting.

TSN was on site for the sod-turning event. They are gathering video of construction to use in advance of nominations closing for the 2016 contest as well as to show the impact of the project at the park.
