Mayor and Council welcome WestJet “Encore” service to Sydney

January 19, 2015

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Cecil Clarke said he welcomes WestJet's announcement today of an Atlantic Canada expansion.

As part of WestJet's Atlantic Canada expansion, a daily flight between Sydney and Halifax will offer an introductory one way fare of $119 and a return fare of $239. WestJet's Bombardier Q400 planes seat over 70 passengers. This new flight is in addition to the airline's seasonal jet service to Sydney.

"Affordable air transport to and from Cape Breton is an economic necessity. Realistic airfares can make Cape Breton more competitive when it comes to conventions, special events and tourism overall," said Clarke. "This new daily flight to Halifax is a big step forward for our region and strengthens Sydney's connection to the WestJet network."

The Mayor met with WestJet executives in Calgary in 2013, while they were considering expansion, and expressed that Sydney makes good business sense for the airline.

"Cape Breton is a world class destination with a growing events and tourism market, but uncompetitive airline prices have been holding us back from reaching our full potential," added Clarke. "This is good news for our hospitality industries, tradespeople, business travellers and Cape Bretoners who have been asking for affordable air fares for many years now."

WestJet has connections all over North America and the Caribbean and also services Europe. More info on the WestJet expansion is available here: https://www.westjet.com/guest/en/deals/offers/summer-schedule.shtml
