May 5, 2014

SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Cape Breton Highlanders are hosting a ceremony to mark the National Day of Honour in recognition of Canada's military mission in Afghanistan.

On Friday, May 9 at 2:00 pm, the public are invited to attend the ceremony in front of the Civic Centre at 320 Esplanade in Sydney. A two minute moment of silence will be held at exactly 2:30 pm in coordination with other ceremonies in communities across Canada.

The National Day of Honour gives Canadians the opportunity to salute the fallen, honour serving members and veterans, celebrate the strength of Canada's remarkable military families and give tribute to all who participated in Canada's 12-year mission in Afghanistan.

The ceremony at the Civic Centre will include the participation of military, legion and police services. High ranking military officials, veterans and families of the fallen will also be in attendance. Speakers are Brigadier-General Nicolas Eldaoud, Commander of the 5th Canadian Division, Mayor Cecil Clarke and George Troicuk, President of the Cape Breton Highlanders Association.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Drill Hall at Victoria Park, 1 Desbarres Street, Sydney.
