City Hall and municipal buildings closed to public

SYDNEY, NS - Effective Wednesday, April 28, City Hall and other municipal buildings will be closed to the public until further notice.

Tax and Water Bill Payments:

Tax or water bill payments can be paid by cheque through mail to 320 Esplanade, Sydney, Nova Scotia B1P 7B9. Cheques may be dropped off at the drop box at City Hall, 320 Esplanade. A notation indicating the account number should be on the cheque.

Payment can also be made by online banking.

Building/Development, Subdivision, & Vendors Licence Applications:

CBRM Planning and Development will now be accepting Building and Development Permits, Subdivision, and Vendors Licence applications by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Building and Development Permit applications must include attached electronic drawings, plans, site plan, location certificate, and approvals from outside agencies, if necessary (Nova Scotia Environment and Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal).

Associated fees will be added to the tax account on the property until further notice.

Subdivision applications must include Statement of Registration and an electronic copy of the subdivision plan.

Associated fees will be invoiced to the Surveyor.

Vendor Licence Applications must include all submission items identified on the application form to be processed.

Building Inspections:

Building inspections are available to be scheduled with the following protocol:
All interaction regarding inspections, documentation, booking, review, etc., will be conducted electronically, digitally and/or by phone.
Builders are to monitor on-site workers and follow the Provincial COVID-19 Restrictions and Guidance for prevention.

To schedule an inspection, please provide the following information:

1) Has anyone who has been on site travelled out of province in the last 14 days?

2) Is there anyone who has been on the site currently in legally required self or imposed isolation within the last 14 days?

3) Will the site be empty?

4) All inspection sites are required to be vacated at the time of inspection. Social distancing procedures as recommended by the Federal and Provincial Health Authority`s shall be observed.

5) Any inspection site that is “occupied” with or without a permit, will have inspections deferred indefinitely.
