FOUR WEEK PROGRAM WILL DEVELOP GRASSROOTS MUSIC INDUSTRY SKILLS IN LOCAL YOUTH

Sydney, Nova Scotia – Youth participation in all aspects of the music industry is essential to the long term sustainability of the industry. The Youth in Music Program, presented by CBRM Recreation and the Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative (CBMIC), is intended to provide mentorship in a variety of music industry related subjects necessary to begin working in the music industry. Participants will be passionate individuals who have the potential to become future leaders in the community.

The program is aimed at youth aged 16-20 with a particular interest in grassroots music industry experiences, whether on the performance, technical, or events side. The program will focus on event promotion, production, and management, as well as transferrable skills in areas of marketing, audio, and community development. The program will run on weekends from November 14th to December 5th, with participants taking part in workshops and meeting influential industry players throughout the four weeks.

Albert Lionais is the operations manager for the Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative. Albert has spent over ten years as a touring musician, most notably in rock groups Tom Fun Orchestra and I Was a Spy, while also working as a sound technician in the local area. He has also worked as a studio engineer for albums by Tom Fun Orchestra, Carmen Townsend, and Like a Motorcycle, and holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Mount Allison University.

Joe Costello is a program coordinator for the CBRM Recreation Department. Joe has spent much of his adult life as a concert promoter and event manager, booking concerts for musicians from across North America at various theatres, all ages, and licensed venues. He has also worked as a sound technician, with clients including the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board, Celtic Colours, and the Highland Arts Theatre, as well as a marketing consultant and graphic designer.
