FREE Safe Sharps Drop-Off at the Sydney Mines Fire Department: Monday, July 15, 2024
CBRM Solid Waste is hosting a Free Used Safe Sharps Drop-Off at the Sydney Mines Fire Department on Elliot Street in Sydney Mines. The Free Used Safe Sharps Drop-Off takes place on Monday, July 15 from 10am to 2pm. Rain or Shine
Remember, used needles, lancets and other sharps DO NOT get disposed of in the garbage, blue bags or green cart for disposal. If you do not have a way to dispose of needles, please give the hotline a call at 902-567-1337.
Be safe with your Used Sharps and Dispose of them Properly!
CBRM Solid Waste Facility: Site Registration Form
If you are a new business of commercial contractor hauling waste materials to the Waste Management Facility, you will be required to register your vehicle with the Solid Waste Department. On your first visit to the site to unload, you will be directed to the Solid Waste Administration Office to register. To save time, you can download and fill out the Site Registration Form found below. The filled-out registration form can be dropped off at 145 Spar Road in Sydney or emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

New items added to the Electronics Recycling Program
On June 1, 2024, new electronics will be accepted in the Electronics Recycling Program. These obligated products items will no longer get placed in the garbage for disposal. These products can be dropped off at your local EPRA Depot for proper recycling.
Effective June 1, 2024 the following obligated products will be accepted for electronics Recycling with EPRA Nova Scotia:

Divert NS Beverage Container Recycling
Divert NS's beverage container recycling program applies to all ready-to-serve beverage containers with some exceptions. While protein drinks as well as diet & nutritional supplements, (such as Premier Protein, Muscle Milk, Boost Simply, Boost Diabetic), are included in their program and subject to a deposit, containers that are clearly labelled ‘Meal Replacement’ or ‘Formulated Liquid Diet’ are NOT subject to a deposit and therefore are not accepted at the Enviro-Depots. These containers can be placed in your blue bag used for Containers and Plastics. Please remember to rinse them out before disposal.

Northside Public Drop-Off Site: OPEN Saturday, July 6, 2024
The Northside Public Drop-Off Site located off King Street in North Sydney is OPEN Saturday, July 6 from 8am to 2:45pm.
Reporting an Illegal Dumpsite
Illegal dumping is a crime in CBRM. Residents who witness illegal dumping or locates an illegal dumpsite is encouraged to report it to CBRM’s Waste Management Hotline at (902)567-1337. The Solid Waste Department has a full-time constable on staff who investigates all reported dumpsites. You can also report illegal dumping by using the solid waste mobile app. The form is available in the Need Help Section of the App. Check it out today by downloading the Solid Waste App from the Apple Store or the Google Play Store.
2024 Seasonal Leaf and Yard Drop-Off Site Schedule
The seasonal leaf and yard waste drop-off sites located in North Sydney, Glace Bay and New Waterford open one day a week between mid-May and mid-November will open for the season the Week of May 12, 2024.

Curbside Collection Reminder: Are you Using Clear Garbage Bags?
Residents are reminded a maximum of five garbage bags can be placed out for curbside collection each week. Please remember, only one garbage bag you use should be dark. Any additional garbage bags you place out for collection each week must be CLEAR.

Reporting a Damaged Green Cart
It is important to regularly inspect your green cart for damage. If you notice holes, openings, cracks, missing vents or wheels, cracked lifts or lid damage, please contact the Solid Waste Department to report the damage. Phoneline educators will record your information and add your civic address to the department’s Green Cart Assessment List. To contact the hotline, phone (902) 567-1337. Educators are available to respond to inquiries 8:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
Curbside Collection: Weather Reminder
If a weather forecast is predicting unfavorable conditions and it is your collection day, you can choose to hold onto your materials until your area’s next regularly scheduled collection day.
- Extra garbage bags and green cart material will be collected on your area’s next regularly scheduled garbage and green cart collection day.
- Blue bags will be collected on your area’s NEXT regularly scheduled blue bag collection week.
If a resident decides to place materials curbside during a weather event, it is the resident’s responsibility to make sure the material remains secure at the curb.
At the end of the collection day, if material is not collected, please remove it from the curb. It is a resident’s responsibility to remove uncollected materials at the end the day.

Seasonal Leaf and Yard Drop-Off Sites
The seasonal leaf and yard drop-off sites located in North Sydney, New Waterford and Glace Bay will open for the season the week of May 12, 2024.
Residents can continue to bring tree debris and other leaf and yard waste to the Waste Management Site on SPAR road in Sydney year-round 8am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Curbside Collection: Inclement Weather Reminder
If a weather forecast is predicting unfavorable conditions and it is your collection day, you can choose to hold onto your materials until your area’s next regularly scheduled collection day.
- EXTRA garbage bags and green cart material will be collected on your area’s next regularly scheduled collection day.
- Blue bags will be collected on your area's next regularly scheduled blue bag collection week.
If you decide to place your materials curbside during inclement weather, it is your responsibility to make sure the material remains secure at the curb.
At the end of your collection day, if your material is not collected, please remove it from the curb. It is your responsibility to remove any uncollected materials at the end of your collection day.

Nova Scotia Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban
Single use plastic bags are banned in Nova Scotia since October 30, 2020. Businesses are no longer permitted to place a customers purchases in single-use plastic bags at checkouts. Please remember to bring your own reusable bag.

CBRM's Residential Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Site
Residents are reminded hazardous waste is not accepted during heavy garbage collection or collected during regular curbside collection. If you have hazardous waste items to dispose of, you can take to CBRM’s Residential Hazardous Waste Drop-off Site. Residents can drop off their household hazardous waste items for three at this drop-off site.

Monday to Friday: 8:30 am to 4pm
Saturdays: 8:30am to 3:30pm
HHW materials accepted at the HHW Depot includes:
Thinners, cleaners, pesticides & herbicides, pool chemicals, aersols, small propane cylinders, kerosene, anti-freeze, solvents, motor oil, glycol and items containing mercury.
Important Reminder:
Upon arrival, please go into the administration office to advise staff you have hazardous waste materials to drop-off.
