Municipality prepares for first major winter storm of the season
January 4, 2018
SYDNEY, NS – The municipality’s emergency management team has met in anticipation of today’s weather. Planning includes preparing comfort shelters, if needed, and communications channels to inform the public of alerts, warnings and the opening of shelters.
“A significant challenge with this particular storm is the potential for power outages and falling trees or powerlines,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke. “The extreme high winds predicted are very concerning. Gusts of 120 kilometres per hour are hurricane strength winds that can knock over trees and power lines and carry debris.” See this site for latest weather forecasts: https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/report_e.html?ns19
“We can’t stress enough to residents that it is preferable that they stay safely indoors. Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of this storm if at all possible,” he added.
