Deadlines ahead for two CBRM programs to assist ratepayers with property taxes

SYDNEY NS - Eligible residents are encouraged to apply for two property tax assistance programs before the end of the year.
The Property Tax Financing Program is available to owners of residential properties and commercial properties who have experienced financial hardship through loss of revenue related to the Covid-19 State of Emergency.
Owners of properties used for tourist accommodations, such as hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts, may also be eligible.
Approved applicants' tax payments will be spread out over 30 months. The first six payments will be $25 per month. The remainder of the tax bill will be divided by 24 to determine monthly payments. A low interest rate of 1.35 per cent will be applied to your monthly payments.
Another program for low income residents provides a $225 tax rebate. The Low Income Tax Exemption is available to residential property owners living in their own homes.
CBRM partners with TALO Cafebar for food and beverage at the Glace Bay Miners Forum

SYDNEY, NS – CBRM will partner with TALO Cafebar to provide food and beverage services for the Glace Bay Miners Forum, which reopened in late October 2020. This follows a competitive procurement process in late 2019 where TALO was the successful bidder.
Under the terms of the five-year agreement, TALO will manage the Forum’s food and beverage program, including the canteen, community room and restaurant and lounge. The canteen opened on November 1. The restaurant and lounge and community room will open in early 2021. Plans include a sports bar atmosphere and pub menu offering and catering for weddings, reunions, and special events.
“We are pleased to partner with TALO to deliver an amazing food and beverage experience for patrons of the newly renovated Miners Forum," said Amanda McDougall, Mayor of CBRM. "This partnership also an creates an opportunity for a successful local company to expand their business."
CBRM Mayor and Council Swearing-In Ceremony livestream

SYDNEY, NS – Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s new Mayor and Council will be sworn-in on Thursday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m.
The ceremony will be held at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney and livestreamed on CBRM’s YouTube channel. The YouTube channel is at www.youtube.com/CapeBretonRegionalMunicipality/live
The ceremony is not open to the public or media due to COVID-19 public health restrictions.
"The swearing-in of a new Council is a moment to celebrate and prepare for the work ahead of us. While COVID-19 has made our ability to gather a challenge, we have found a way to mark this special occasion while respecting the restrictions in place that keep our communities safe,” said Mayor-Elect Amanda McDougall. "I look forward to the ceremony and hope that the pubic are able to join us virtually as we embark on this new term of the CBRM Mayor and Council."

Voter help kiosks available this week in Sydney and Eskasoni
SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Regional Municipality's Returning Officer is addressing voter access challenges raised by Chief Leroy Denny by opening a voter help kiosk in Eskasoni.
A kiosk is an internet-connected computer that voters can use to cast their ballot using their voter's letter and PIN. Telephone voting is also available. Those who do not have a letter will be required to sign an oath of qualification, which will be transmitted to the Returning Office and then the voter letter will be issued.
"Several factors were considered in my decision to open a voting kiosk in Eskasoni," said Returning Officer Deborah Campbell Ryan. "Eskasoni is a remote community with a large number of residents who experience language barriers. There are approximately 2,380 residents of Eskasoni eligible to vote but more than 500 of the voter PIN letters were returned to our office by Canada Post as incomplete address."
Campbell says she agreed with the unique concerns raised by Chief Leroy Denny and worked with the Band Council to open a voting kiosk to assist those who need help to vote.

Curb-side collection is taking place today, Wednesday, Sept 23, as regularly scheduled. If you choose to hold onto materials due to unfavorable weather conditions:
• Extra garbage bags and green cart material will be collected on your areas next regularly scheduled garbage and green cart collection day.
• Blue bags will be collected on your areas next regularly scheduled blue bag collection week

Heavy garbage collection set for September 28

SYDNEY, NS - CBRM’s municipal-wide residential heavy garbage collection starts on Monday, September 28, 2020. Residents living at properties eligible for curbside collection must have their large, heavy or bulky household items placed to the curb no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28.
Residents are encouraged to read the details online at CBRM's website. www.cbrm.ns.ca/heavygarbage
Some of the information includes:
Sofas, chairs, upholstered furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpeting, flooring, vinyl windows and doors will be collected. Panes of glass from windows should be removed when possible. Collectors are not responsible for removing broken glass and debris from your curb. Carpeting should be rolled and tied with string or rope.
Objects must be safe to handle with no protruding nails, staples or other sharps.
Citizen Service Centre opens September 8, transit fares resume September 14

SYDNEY, NS - Fare collection on Cape Breton Transit will resume on Monday, September 14.
The Citizen Service Centre at City Hall, 320 Esplanade, will be open starting on Tuesday, September 8 for those seeking transit passes.
Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Citizen Service Centre is also open for residents to pay tax and water bills, parking tickets and tipping fees.
TRAFFIC UPDATE: George and Prince Street detour
July 22, 2020
SYDNEY, NS - TRAFFIC UPDATE: As part of the George Street infrastructure upgrade project, the Prince Street and George Street intersection will be partly detoured on Thursday and Friday (July 23 and 24).
The section of Prince Street between George Street and Johnston Street to be closed and traffic will be detoured via Pitt Street and Dodd Street.
Access to businesses within this section of road will be provided and the intersection will be re-opened at the end of each work day. The current traffic control setup will remain on George Street with the exception that no eastbound traffic will be permitted on to Prince Street.
