Voter help kiosks available this week in Sydney and Eskasoni
SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Regional Municipality's Returning Officer is addressing voter access challenges raised by Chief Leroy Denny by opening a voter help kiosk in Eskasoni.
A kiosk is an internet-connected computer that voters can use to cast their ballot using their voter's letter and PIN. Telephone voting is also available. Those who do not have a letter will be required to sign an oath of qualification, which will be transmitted to the Returning Office and then the voter letter will be issued.
"Several factors were considered in my decision to open a voting kiosk in Eskasoni," said Returning Officer Deborah Campbell Ryan. "Eskasoni is a remote community with a large number of residents who experience language barriers. There are approximately 2,380 residents of Eskasoni eligible to vote but more than 500 of the voter PIN letters were returned to our office by Canada Post as incomplete address."
Campbell says she agreed with the unique concerns raised by Chief Leroy Denny and worked with the Band Council to open a voting kiosk to assist those who need help to vote.

Due to Hurricane Teddy City Hall is closed for the day.
CBTransit is fully operational.
Curb-side collection is taking place today, Wednesday, Sept 23, as regularly scheduled. If you choose to hold onto materials due to unfavorable weather conditions:
• Extra garbage bags and green cart material will be collected on your areas next regularly scheduled garbage and green cart collection day.
• Blue bags will be collected on your areas next regularly scheduled blue bag collection week

Heavy garbage collection set for September 28
September 11, 2020
SYDNEY, NS - CBRM’s municipal-wide residential heavy garbage collection starts on Monday, September 28, 2020. Residents living at properties eligible for curbside collection must have their large, heavy or bulky household items placed to the curb no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28.

Some of the information includes:
Sofas, chairs, upholstered furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpeting, flooring, vinyl windows and doors will be collected. Panes of glass from windows should be removed when possible. Collectors are not responsible for removing broken glass and debris from your curb. Carpeting should be rolled and tied with string or rope.
Objects must be safe to handle with no protruding nails, staples or other sharps.
Citizen Service Centre opens September 8, transit fares resume September 14

SYDNEY, NS - Fare collection on Cape Breton Transit will resume on Monday, September 14.
The Citizen Service Centre at City Hall, 320 Esplanade, will be open starting on Tuesday, September 8 for those seeking transit passes.
Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Citizen Service Centre is also open for residents to pay tax and water bills, parking tickets and tipping fees.
TRAFFIC UPDATE: George and Prince Street detour
July 22, 2020
SYDNEY, NS - TRAFFIC UPDATE: As part of the George Street infrastructure upgrade project, the Prince Street and George Street intersection will be partly detoured on Thursday and Friday (July 23 and 24).
The section of Prince Street between George Street and Johnston Street to be closed and traffic will be detoured via Pitt Street and Dodd Street.
Access to businesses within this section of road will be provided and the intersection will be re-opened at the end of each work day. The current traffic control setup will remain on George Street with the exception that no eastbound traffic will be permitted on to Prince Street.
CBRM NOTICE: Road work on George Street
July 13, 2020
A significant road work project begins today, July 13, on George Street in Sydney.
The George Street Collector Road Upgrades project is expected to last 10 weeks and will include road rehabilitation between Prince Street and Dorchester Street along with intersection upgrades at the Prince Street intersection.
Throughout the duration of the project there will be traffic control setups in place that will cause a reduction to one lane of traffic in each direction.
Transit Cape Breton updates

Permanent bus stop location change:
A Charlotte Street bus stop is moving a block north. The stop that was located in front of 7 by 7 Restaurant and the Parlour Sweet House will now be located next to the Scotiabank building. The work to move the signage will be completed today and the new stop will be in effect. Passengers are asked to watch for the movement of the signs and respect Covid-19 social distance with the workers on site.
Municipal Property Tax Financing Program deadline approaching
June 26, 2020
SYDNEY, NS - The deadline for applications for the CBRM Property Tax Financing Program is coming up on June 30.
The municipality is offering property tax financing help for owners of residential and commercial properties negatively affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Residential home owners and commercial property owners who have experienced a significant reduction in income can apply.
The program sets a $25 monthly payment for the next 6 months and the remainder of the tax bill will be divided by 24 to determine the monthly amount for the following 24 months. An interest rate of 1.35 per cent will be applied to the monthly payments. The financing program assists taxpayers in avoiding late payment charges as tax accounts in arrears are subject to 10 per cent interest on unpaid balances. June 30 is the payment deadline for interim tax bills.
