Several municipal comfort centres now open in CBRM

CBRM is advising residents that several comfort centres are now open in select areas for residents with loss of power.

These centres opened at 11am today, Friday, January 5^th, 2018.

They will remain open until 10pm this evening, dependent on power restoration times.

Comfort centre locations are as follows:

Grand Lake Road Fire Hall (850 Grand Lake road) – OPEN until 10pm
Big Pond Fire Hall (7193 east Bay Highway) - OPEN until 10pm
Gabarus Fire Hall (8785 Gabarus Highway) - OPEN until 10pm
North Sydney Fire Hall (14 Pierce Street) - OPEN until 10pm
Donkin Fire Hall (10 South Street) - OPEN until 10pm
New Waterford Fire Hall (3336 Walsh Avenue) - OPEN until 10pm
Christmas Island Fire Hall (8539 Grand Narrows Highway) - OPEN until 10pm

Due to current weather and road conditions, service for all Transit Cape Breton will be cancelled for the remainder of the day. Any buses that are currently on a route, will complete that route. All buses should be completely off the road by 4pm.

Transit will resume regular schedule once storm ceases. Further information will be provided at that time.

Municipality prepares for first major winter storm of the season

SYDNEY, NS – The municipality’s emergency management team has met in anticipation of today’s weather. Planning includes preparing comfort shelters, if needed, and communications channels to inform the public of alerts, warnings and the opening of shelters.

“A significant challenge with this particular storm is the potential for power outages and falling trees or powerlines,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke. “The extreme high winds predicted are very concerning. “We can’t stress enough to residents that it is preferable that they stay safely indoors. Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of this storm if at all possible,” he added.

CBRM Recreation Announces New Year’s Day Event

NEW YEAR’S DAY EVENT TO FEATURE A NUMBER OF THE PERFORMANCES FROM CANCELLED CBRMNYE EVENT

The wind may blow hard, but it’s not a knock out punch for the CBRM Recreation Department. Following the cancellation of the CBRMNYE event on New Year’s Eve due to excessive windchill conditions, Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Recreation Department announces New Year’s Day with Port Cities to be held at 3pm on January 1st at the Highland Arts Theatre.

The event, which will also feature performance by Howie MacDonald and renowned street performers Bella Magic, Steve Goodtime, and Might Mike, will run approximately three hours and is a free public event. Highland Arts Theatre (The HAT) is the former St. Andrews Church located at 40 Bentinck Street, and has been operating since 2014 as a venue for many concerts, theatrical productions, and more.

“With the amount of excitement CBRMNYE had from our residents, we are excited to still be able to present our headlining performers Port Cities and utilize this incredible venue in the heart of the Sydney Waterfront District,” says CBRM Recreation Program Coordinator Joe Costello. “With Howie MacDonald and the world class street performers joining us, we feel it will capture some of the magic we intended for New Year’s Eve in a more safe and comfortable environment.”

CBRM Cancels Waterfront Entertainment For New Year’s Eve

WINDCHILL EXCEEDING -20 POSES POTENTIAL PUBLIC SAFETY RISK

Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Recreation Department has cancelled the live entertainment on the waterfront for New Year’s Eve. With temperatures lower and wind gusts higher than forecasted, the windchill will potentially be a risk for public safety and inhibit the enjoyment of the public at the event.

CBRM Recreation will continue to monitor conditions to see if the fireworks display, scheduled for 9pm over Sydney Harbour, will be able to move ahead unimpeded.

“Afternoon highs have dipped far below the original temperatures forecasted and Environment Canada is calling for gusts of up to 50 km/h,” says CBRM Recreation Program Coordinator Joe Costello. “With this, the ability to ensure the safe operation of equipment and the safety of those working and attending the event is diminished. We cannot in good conscience continue with tonight’s entertainment in these conditions.”

Public consultations scheduled on Charter for CBRM

Public consultations on the development of a charter for Cape Breton Regional Municipality will be held in January.

A charter for the municipality would be designated by provincial legislation. A charter is the Crown’s ability through its authority, the Province of Nova Scotia, to convey or grant authority, rights and privileges to the CBRM for the purposes of governance for better social, public and economic outcomes. These public sessions are an opportunity to provide input for the crafting of a charter for CBRM and the information gathered will be made available to the provincial government.

Two sessions are scheduled:

The first session will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the Council Chamber at City Hall.

The second session will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 1:30 pm in the Council Chamber at City Hall.
