Now hiring 2024 Election workers

Calls for work are being made between now and Friday, September 27.

Worker training is scheduled for the evenings of October 1 and 3.

 

Are you passionate about democracy and eager to play an important role in your community? The municipality is currently recruiting more than 300 election workers to serve in different temporary roles to help ensure a fair, accessible and efficient municipal election this October.

Interested? We're looking for community members who

    • want to participate in the democratic process
    • are looking for short-term, temporary work
    • are 18 years of age or older
    • are able to legally work in Canada
    • enjoy working with people
    • are problem solvers

When are workers needed?

Temporary election workers are needed to support advance voting beginning September 30th until election day, Saturday October 19, 2024.  Workers are needed for the help desk during advance polls and in person on election day.

Applicants who can't work each day are still encouraged to apply and asked to identify which date(s) they can work. All election workers must attend mandatory paid training in advance (multiple training sessions will be available between September 16 and October 12). Training rate is $60 for approximately 2.5 hours.

 Please note: The hiring process for election officials will start mid-September. However, you are welcome to submit your application now!

What do election workers do?

There are different roles required to ensure that eligible voters can conveniently exercise their right to vote during advance voting and on election day.

 

  • Ensures polls are set up as required and that they open and close at the prescribed time
  • Ensures that election officers are on time
  • Oversees the work of election officers in the polling location
  • Oversees the collection and return of ballot boxes
  • Handles escalated matters in the polling location related to voters, candidates or agents
  • Ensures ballot boxes/poll books and election materials are secure at all times
  • Rate: $355/poll day starting one hour prior to opening of poll to end of reporting all polls
  • Sets up the poll with necessary supplies
  • Ensures electors have satisfactory proof of identity and address before voting
  • Ensures the poll clerk, electors, and candidate's representatives follow the rules and procedures
  • Manages the registration process at the polling station
  • Returns the ballot box and related materials to the SDRO as instructed
  • Rate: $269/poll day starting one hour prior to opening of poll to reporting of poll
  • Assists the DRO to set up and open the polling station
  • Assists the DRO to ensure voting proceeds in an orderly fashion
  • Locates the elector's name on the list of electors and strikes it through
  • Maintains the Record of Poll
  • Assists with counting the ballots
  • Keeps ballot boxes/poll books and election materials are secure at all times
  • Rate: $264/poll day starting one hour prior to opening of poll to end of poll 
  • Directs electors and candidates' representatives to the appropriate polling station
  • Provides electors with information regarding satisfactory proof of identity and address
  • Directs the orderly flow of people in the polling station
  • Ensures the poll closes at the prescribed time and that electors in the polling location are processed by that time and have exercised their right to vote
  • Assists in the security of the election materials and site
  • Rate: $150/poll day starting one hour prior to poll opening to end of poll
  • Provides information about how and where to vote
  • Supports voters with eligibility information, registrations, and corrections
  • Answers various questions about the voting process and procedures
  • Rate: $20/per hour for hours worked
  • Beginning September 30 - October 18 Monday- Friday, and Saturday, October 19
