CBRM NOTICE: PATNIC AVE BALL FIELD

The ball field at the end of Patnic Ave. in Mira Road is undergoing a restoration by Sydney Minor Baseball.
Dogs are no longer permitted on the field as it is now being returned to its former status as an in-use ball field.
Dogs are allowed on the walking track around the field.

TRANSIT CB: Sunday service on Route 1 begins this weekend

SYDNEY – Transit Cape Breton is offering Sunday service on Route 1 Glace Bay-Sydney beginning on Sunday, October 17.

Service runs from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm with departures from Dorchester Street hub at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm and departures from Marconi Street at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm.

Transit service changes start Tuesday, October 12

Transit Cape Breton schedule and routing changes add hourly service to the Regional Hospital and later service to New Waterford

SYDNEY, NS – Beginning on Tuesday, October 12, Transit Cape Breton Route 13 will serve the hospital hourly on Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm and on Saturday between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Along with the recent routing change to serve Open Hearth Park and Harbourside Commercial Park, Route 9 now features later service to New Waterford. This change is prompted by CBU students seeking to travel to New Waterford later in the evening. The last bus to arrive in New Waterford now will arrive at 10:00 pm instead of 7:00 pm.

Updating the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Active Transportation Plan

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality has initiated a review to update the municipality's Active Transportation Plan. The goal of the review is to help the municipality to become a more healthy, vibrant and sustainable community that provides multiple modes of active transportation routes connecting people and places.

This new plan will outline infrastructure upgrades and new routes required to improve the walkable and wheelable network across the municipality.

Active Transportation week consultations will take place throughout September 13-17.

The design consultants for this project, Fathom Studio, will lead the sessions to gather feedback from the community.

TRANSIT SERVICE UPDATE: Open Hearth Park and Harbourside Commercial Park now serviced by Transit Cape Breton

Cape Breton Transit is adding service to Harbourside Commercial Park and Open Hearth Park effective September 7.

Route 9 will now travel along the Sydney Port Access Road and Ferry Street to the Dorchester Street hub. It will return along the same route.

Route 9 begins in New Victoria and travels through New Waterford to Cape Breton University, the Mayflower Mall and Walmart. It will now proceed north onto Sydney Port Access Road with new stops in the area of Protocase and Horizon Achievement Centre and Open Hearth Park. After these stops, the route proceeds directly to Dorchester Street and will return to Daley Road in New Victoria along the same route.

The Water Utility has indicated there is a repair required in GLACE BAY near the Phalen's Road booster pumping station. The areas of Phalen’s Road, Steele's Hill, Dominion and Reserve will potentially experience low pressure overnight and into tomorrow.

CBRM and Cape Breton Partnership seek community input on municipal planning and economic development plan

Open House events planned for week of August 23-27

SYDNEY, NS – The Cape Breton Regional Municipality and the Cape Breton Partnership are seeking community input for the municipality’s collaborative city planning initiative called “CBRM Forward”.

A series of open houses will be held across the CBRM next week, beginning with the Port of Sydney (August 23), followed by the Fireman’s Club in North Sydney (August 25), and concluding at the Miners Forum in Glace Bay (August 26).

Additional “pop-up” events will take place throughout the CBRM with both morning and afternoon sessions. In-person events will be held in accordance with public health guidelines.

Phase One of the two-year project is currently underway to develop an economic development strategy to address investment and business growth, as well as a growth management strategy to address immigration and population.

Provincial election questions for Candidates from Mayor and Council

Below are responses (PDF), posted in the order they are received, to the questions posed to provincial candidates by Mayor and Council.

The questions are as follows:

1. Equalization Fairness for Nova Scotia municipalities, and particularly CBRM, continues to be disproportionate. Without addressing this issue, the disparities in infrastructure and services are increasing between municipal units across the Province. Because provincial transfer payments to the CBRM have been frozen since 2012, the deficit between our mandated provincial costs and what we receive as a transfer payment now results in a $5+ million dollar deficit. As MLA, will you commit to developing a more equitable transfer formula for the CBRM?

2. The Mayor and Council’s draft Strategic Plan for the CBRM includes key infrastructure projects such as a new Central Library, Centre 200 expansion, development and increased commercial opportunities within our harbours and other important investments. How will you support these development projects to advance the CBRM in terms of growth and sustainability?

Councillor on medical leave

SYDNEY, NS – Cape Breton Regional Municipality District 10 Councillor Darren Bruckschwaiger will be on a leave of absence to attend to personal health matters.
He has communicated with his constituents through Facebook to inform them of his absence and alternate contacts while he is away.
