Storm Safety Information - January 12, 2020

The CBRFES, Emergency Management Division is monitoring the current weather system and is working with, and receiving situational reports and weather forecasts from Environment Canada and the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Organization:

• Freezing rain/ice pellets conditions occurring. These conditions are expected to continue until 8pm-9pm tonight.
• Slight winds gusting 40-60 km/h are expected. When freezing rain/ice pellets diminish, light snow flurries are expected to begin and persist through Sunday night into Monday morning with temperatures from -4 to -8C.
• Driving conditions will be poor, residents are asked to stay of the roads unless absolutely necessary. If travel is required, please proceed with lower speeds and extreme caution. Residents and travellers are warned that highways, roads, walkways and parking areas will become slippery and hazardous.
• Power outages are possible with ice weighted power lines and tree limbs. Residents are reminded, should power be lost, to exercise caution when using alternate sources of light and heat.
• Do not use candles as light sources or barbecues for heat or cooking indoors.
• If using generators, ensure they are outside, well ventilated, no vent blockage, and not vented near windows and/or doors.
• Residents are requested to continue to monitor information sources and to be self prepared for 72 hours should conditions worsen. If there is power disruption for a prolonged period, the Cape Breton Emergency Management Division will establish a safe, required and suitable location for a Warming Center(s) or Shelter(s).
• If they are required and established, the public will be notified using several information sources. Predetermining areas for Warming Shelters and/or Shelters is not an acceptable option as areas of need and safety can not be predetermined or established prior to a weather event.
• CBRM Citizens are also reminded to adhere to the CBRM Overnight Parking Regulations as Cape Breton Regional Police will be working with the CBRM Public Works Department with storm clearing and clean up operations.

CBRM NEW YEARS EVE EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO FORECASTED WEATHER

December 30, 2019

CBRM’s New Year’s Eve Event at City Hall is being cancelled due to high winds and inclement weather expected for tomorrow. The decision is being made for public safety based on the special weather statement issued for the area forecasting snow and ice pellets changing to rain, along with strong winds with gusts up to 60-80 kms. 

CBRM will work to reschedule performances for 2020. 

The extra transit runs will also be cancelled. On NYE, Tues, Dec 31^st, CB Transit will follow their regular weekday schedule, with service ending at 5pm, as per usual NYE transit schedule.

UPDATE: CBRM EVACUATION DIRECTIVE

Tuesday, December 10, 2019 (4:50pm) 

Some residents now allowed back in their units at 297 Rotary Drive.  

Based on continued assessments, residents in units on one side of the building are now permitted back into their apartments. These units have functioning electricity and are deemed safe for re-entry.  

UNITS/APARTMENTS STILL UNDER EVACUATION DIRECTIVE:

Equalling 21 units still under evacuation directive, with 51 people affected.  

The evacuation of the above listed units is still necessary to protect the safety of residents living in the area of the apartment complex that has sustained severe damage and flooding during the high winds and rain. The directive is issued for reasons of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of occupants in the above noted properties, and to remove them from present and imminent danger.

 Stipulations have been put in place for the building owner for the re-entry of approximately half of the tenants, including security on each floor, as well as fire watch to ensure the re-entering public are protected from fires.

 Evaluations will continue and more information will be shared when available.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services have issued an evacuation directive on an apartment complex at 297 Rotary Drive. 

• 297 Rotary Drive – all units  

The evacuation directive commences immediately and will continue until the situation can be stabilized and risk to residents can be mitigated.  The evacuation is necessary to protect the safety of residents living in the apartment complex that has sustained severe damage and flooding during the high winds and rain. The directive is issued for reasons of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of occupants in the above noted properties, and to remove them from present and imminent danger.

Emergency Shelter Information:

There is a bus transporting evacuated residents from Rotary Drive to Centre 200.

CBRM Announces New Year’s Eve Event at CBRM City Hall 

SAVE THE DATE FOR CBRM’S OUTDOOR NYE EVENT, FEATURING FIREWORKS OVER SYDNEY HARBOUR, LIVE MUSIC, PERFORMANCES AND MORE SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA 

It will be a family friendly New Year’s Eve at CBRM City Hall with much to be joyous about as we ring in the 25^th year of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. An outdoor event taking place from 5-9PM on December 31^st, CBRM NYE will feature live music, performances, and culminate with a bang as fireworks light up the sky over Sydney Harbour at 9pm to close out the evening. 

Performing onstage at CBRM NYE will be award winning Cape Breton bands The Tom Fun Orchestra and The Town Heroes. Also featuring entertainment from Maritime Marionettes, close up magician Carmen Giorno, and fire performer Stephanie MacPhee. More weather dependent activities are being planned, which will be announced closer to the event.  

CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke commented, “We invite everyone to join us on New Year’s Eve for what is planned to be an amazing fireworks display and outdoor celebration, as we ring in 2020 and our 25^th year as a Regional Municipality”. 

Food and cash donations will be accepted on site to support Loaves & Fishes and Canadian Tire Jumpstart. All donations receive a #CBRM25 glow tambourine, while supplies last.
