Comfort Centres Opening at 12 Noon today

Several municipal comfort centres opening at 12 noon today

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) is advising residents that several comfort centres will be opening at 12 noon today for residents with loss of power.

Citizens who require a comfort centre due to power loss are reminded to only attend a location if you can do so safely. Please drive with care, watch for debris, downed trees and power lines. Please respect all barricades and road closures. 

Comfort centre locations are as follows:

  • Reserve Mines Fire Department (203 Main St, Reserve Mines)

  • Big Pond Fire Department (7193 east Bay Highway, Big Pond)

Services will include heat, hot drinks and charging stations. Closing times will be determined later today.

CB Transit Update

CB Transit Update (Sunday, Sept 8, 9:30am)

Transit is running this morning, however we are having general service delays on all routes today due to road closures and debris. Route 14 – CBU Sunday Service – is delayed and will have no service between Gardiner Road before Sydney Airport and Tim Hortons in Reserve due to a downed tree.Currently no service in Dominion due to road closure.

Safety Reminders for CBRM Residents Post Storm

Crews have been out working through the night in all areas of the CBRM. There is a lot of debris down causing obstructions to road ways, including downed trees, branches, leaves and power lines.  

We are still experiencing high winds and are asking residents to please stay off the roads so crews can work safety to clean up.  

  • If possible, continue to stay indoors and keep the roadways clear.
  • If you are driving, please respect all barricades and caution tape.
  • Keep an eye out for fire services crews and do not drive over fire hoses.
  • If traffic signal lights are out or flashing, treat the intersection as a 4-way stop.
  • Signalized crosswalk lights may be out; please be cautious of pedestrians.
  • Please stay away from downed electrical equipment and report to Nova Scotia Power at 1-877-428-6004
  • Don’t use appliances like BBQs or generators in your home or garage; be carbon monoxide aware.
  • If using a generator: Ensure that the generator operates outdoors in well-ventilated conditions, well away from doors or windows, and never in your garage, cto prevent exhaust gases from entering the house.

Transit cancelling for evening service

CB Transit Notice (Sept 7, 6:15pm):

CB Transit will be cancelling service for the remainder of the evening. All buses that are currently out will be finishing their routes.

Transit Update: No service to Dominion

Transit Update: We have a tree down in Dominion. NO service to Dominion until this is cleaned up, likely for the rest of the day. Bus is rerouted to go up Neville street right to Reserve.Other runs are still currently on.

Generator Safety

In the event of power outages, if you are using a generator, please remember these safety tips:

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Ensure that the generator operates outdoors in well-ventilated conditions, wellaway from doors or windows, and never in your garage, cto prevent exhaust gases from entering the house.
  • Connect lights and appliances directly to the generator. If extension cords must be used, ensure they are properly rated, CSA-approved cords.

Active Living Expo on Sept 7

The CBRM Recreation Department and the Cape Breton Fiddlers Marathon are pleased to present the 9th annual Active Living Expo!

This year’s Expo takes place at the Membertou Sports and Wellness Centre on Saturday, September 7 from 1 PM to 5 PM.

Admission to the Expo is free and open to anyone interested in learning about active, healthy living opportunities in CBRM. The Expo offers something for everyone and all ages, whether you’re looking to try a new physical activity or to receive health and nutrition information. Items will also be for sale from various local businesses promoting active, healthy living.

CB Transit Update

CB Transit: A reminder that there is no CB Transit service on Labour Day. This Monday, September 2nd.

REMINDER 2

Construction Advisory:

The NS Dept of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will be starting construction work on Kings Road, under the overpass for Highway 125, starting tomorrow, Tues, August 27.

A portion of the CBRM owned sidewalk will need to be closed for this work to take place. The sidewalk under Highway 125 will be closed from 7 am – 6pm, Tues, Aug 27 through to Friday, Aug 30.
