Cape Breton Regional Municipality applauds action on rail line

SYDNEY, NS – The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is pleased with the provincial government's legislation today to change the Railway Act.
"The government moved today to protect the future of rail service in Cape Breton and we support their efforts fully," said Mayor Cecil Clarke. "The rail line is a critical piece of infrastructure that is part of the full package of highway, air, rail and port intermodal services."
Flags at half mast at CBRM civic buildings

The flags at Cape Breton Regional Municipality civic buildings are at half mast in honour of Canadian soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo who was killed in the line of duty at the National War Memorial today.
Mayor Cecil Clarke says his thought and prayers are with Cpl. Cirillo's family and the families of those injured and impacted by today's attack on Canada's capital.
"Our men and women in uniform stand in harms way each and every day and we are truly grateful for their courage and service," said Clarke. "We saw true bravery today, in those who faced a terrorist threat head on. Our community is grateful and proud."
CBRM urges thorough and definitive review of Miller case

SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is encouraging the provincial Justice Minister to conduct a complete and thorough review of the 1990 death of New Waterford teenager Clayton Miller.
Mayor Clarke wrote to Provincial Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lena Diab and expressed support of the review she announced in September.
"The full scope of the Medical Examiner's office needs to be brought to bear on this matter," said Mayor Clarke in his letter. "The Chief Medical Examiner, Doctor Matt Bowes, must examine all of the previous work that was done and provide as definitive a conclusion as possible."

This REMINDER is for you!
The CBRM Solid Waste Department wishes to remind residents, who receive curbside collection each Monday, of an important CHANGE to their Curbside Collection Day. Beginning in October, Garbage, Green Carts and Blue Bag materials will now be collected on Saturdays. This permanent change will start on Saturday, October 4, 2014.
Your New Curbside Collection Day if you were collected on Mondays:
•Your Garbage and Green Cart will now be collected each week on Saturday.
•Your blue bag week rotation will remain the same but, collected on Saturday.
A notice has been distributed to the areas affected by the Collection Day change. Please phone the Waste Management Hotline if you did not receive a copy of your area's new Curbside Collection Schedule.
For more information on this important Collection Day Change, please phone the Waste Management Hotline 902- 567-1337. Educators are available to respond to inquiries from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality council hires new CAO

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality's new CAO is returning to his Cape Breton roots.
Michael Merritt, 54, an Assistant Deputy Minister in Alberta's Department of Municipal Affairs, was born and raised in Victoria Mines. Today, he became the first Chief Administrative Officer hired by CBRM council as per their duty under the Municipal Government Act.

SYDNEY, NS - Residents in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are seeing road work underway on smaller side streets while major work on main roads has yet to be started.
CBRM is seeking to invest $9 million in cost shared funding on heavy traffic roads. The projects are to be equally cost shared, at one-third each, between the municipality, federal government and provincial government. The funding is administered by the province and has not yet been approved.
Mayor Cecil Clarke says this delay is putting the 2014 road construction season in jeopardy.
