CBRM NEW YEARS EVE EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO FORECASTED WEATHER

December 30, 2019

CBRM’s New Year’s Eve Event at City Hall is being cancelled due to high winds and inclement weather expected for tomorrow. The decision is being made for public safety based on the special weather statement issued for the area forecasting snow and ice pellets changing to rain, along with strong winds with gusts up to 60-80 kms. 

CBRM will work to reschedule performances for 2020. 

The extra transit runs will also be cancelled. On NYE, Tues, Dec 31st, CB Transit will follow their regular weekday schedule, with service ending at 5pm, as per usual NYE transit schedule. 

FREE SKATING at C200 on NYE:
In lieu of the outdoor event, CBRM and Centre 200 will have a free skate from 5:30pm - 8:00pm following the Cape Breton Eagles vs. Charlottetown Islanders game. All are welcome, with hot chocolate and popcorn provided for free. 
 
TASTE OF WINTER:
CBRM will also be hosting more than 30 free activities throughout the winter as part of their Taste of Winter programming. For a full schedule, visit www.tasteofwinter.ca.

UPDATE: CBRM EVACUATION DIRECTIVE

Tuesday, December 10, 2019 (4:50pm) 

Some residents now allowed back in their units at 297 Rotary Drive.  

Based on continued assessments, residents in units on one side of the building are now permitted back into their apartments. These units have functioning electricity and are deemed safe for re-entry.  

UNITS/APARTMENTS STILL UNDER EVACUATION DIRECTIVE:

297 Rotary Drive – UNITS:
113, 115, 117,
213, 214, 215, 216, 217, 218,
313, 314, 315, 316, 317, 318,
413, 414, 415, 416, 417, 418  

Equalling 21 units still under evacuation directive, with 51 people affected.  

The evacuation of the above listed units is still necessary to protect the safety of residents living in the area of the apartment complex that has sustained severe damage and flooding during the high winds and rain. The directive is issued for reasons of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of occupants in the above noted properties, and to remove them from present and imminent danger.

 Stipulations have been put in place for the building owner for the re-entry of approximately half of the tenants, including security on each floor, as well as fire watch to ensure the re-entering public are protected from fires.

 Evaluations will continue and more information will be shared when available.

CBRM EVACUATION DIRECTIVE

Tuesday, December 10, 2019 

Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services have issued an evacuation directive on an apartment complex at 297 Rotary Drive. 

Emergency Officials are delivering notices to the following civic address this afternoon:
  • 297 Rotary Drive – all units  

The evacuation directive commences immediately and will continue until the situation can be stabilized and risk to residents can be mitigated.  The evacuation is necessary to protect the safety of residents living in the apartment complex that has sustained severe damage and flooding during the high winds and rain. The directive is issued for reasons of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of occupants in the above noted properties, and to remove them from present and imminent danger.

CBRM Announces New Year’s Eve Event at CBRM City Hall 

SAVE THE DATE FOR CBRM’S OUTDOOR NYE EVENT, FEATURING FIREWORKS OVER SYDNEY HARBOUR, LIVE MUSIC, PERFORMANCES AND MORE SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA 

It will be a family friendly New Year’s Eve at CBRM City Hall with much to be joyous about as we ring in the 25th year of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. An outdoor event taking place from 5-9PM on December 31st, CBRM NYE will feature live music, performances, and culminate with a bang as fireworks light up the sky over Sydney Harbour at 9pm to close out the evening. 

Performing onstage at CBRM NYE will be award winning Cape Breton bands The Tom Fun Orchestra and The Town Heroes. Also featuring entertainment from Maritime Marionettes, close up magician Carmen Giorno, and fire performer Stephanie MacPhee. More weather dependent activities are being planned, which will be announced closer to the event.  

CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke commented, “We invite everyone to join us on New Year’s Eve for what is planned to be an amazing fireworks display and outdoor celebration, as we ring in 2020 and our 25th year as a Regional Municipality”. 

Food and cash donations will be accepted on site to support Loaves & Fishes and Canadian Tire Jumpstart. All donations receive a #CBRM25 glow tambourine, while supplies last.

CBRM has received reports of persons impersonating CBRM Water Utility Employees, attempting to enter residents’ homes.

Residents are advised that CBRM Water Utility Staff do, from time to time, need access to residents’ homes. However, CBRM employees will have a branded vehicle with a CBRM Water Utility logo, a branded uniform with the same logo, and a CBRM identification badge.  

If you have a CBRM Water Utility representative asking to enter your home, you can call the Water department to verify their identity at: 902-563-5280 or 902-563-5180.

Residents are asked to please report any fraudulent behaviour to Police.
