Grant program adjusted to help impacted organizations

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s Mayor and Council have approved changes to the application criteria for the Sustainability Fund to address challenges arising from COVID-19 and the Province of Nova Scotia’s State of Emergency.  

Maintaining operations is a challenge for the non-profit sector due to current fundraising challenges.  A proposal to widen the eligibility to apply was proposed by the Municipality’s CAO Marie Walsh. 

“Non-profit and charitable organizations are on the front lines of our communities in good times and in times like these,” said Walsh. “They play a vital role in building healthy communities by providing critical services that contribute to economic stability.”     

The current Municipal Grants Policy allows funding for limited types of operating cost.  For this year only, the municipality will change the following: 

1. There will be no requirement or expectation of active fundraising efforts.
2. Grants will not be limited to just the not-for-profit and charitable organizations who are providing services generally delivered or complementing a service otherwise provided by CBRM.
3. Applicants must demonstrate the need for funding by providing prior year financial statements along with current up to date financial information.
4. This is not a replacement for lost revenue or for wage subsidies but strictly to address shortfalls in operating costs.
5. The Province of Nova Scotia must provide matching funding.

Street closure public hearing

May 22, 2020

TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality intends to close an undeveloped portion of Minto Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia, measuring approximately 142 square feet more or less, which is more particularly delineated on a plan of survey prepared by Prendergast Surveys Limited, dated 10 December 2019.

A public hearing in relation to the closing of a portion of the said street will be held online Tuesday, the 9th day of June, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. at which time Council will hear those in favor and those opposed to the closing of a portion of this street.

Centre 200 box office to open with limited hours for refunds

SYDNEY, NS – The Centre 200 Box Office will be open on Wednesday, May 6 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and also on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8 at the same hours.

The box office will be open to refund tickets. 

Tickets available for refund at this time are:

• the final three Eagles games of the regular season.
• the Professional Bull Riding Show on May 22 and 23.
• the Clint Black concert that was scheduled for June 3, 2020 (this show has been re-scheduled to May 27, 2021)
• the Travis Tritt concert scheduled for October 22, 2020 (this show has been rescheduled to April 22, 2021) 

Members of the public attending for refunds will follow physical distancing protocols. A limited number of people will be able to enter the building at one time and distance will be maintained between people while they complete their transactions.

Construction sites and solid waste facilities in operation

SYDNEY, NS -  Cape Breton Regional Municipality is announcing roadwork operation locations and the re-opening of the solid waste facility in Sydney.  

Roadwork will begin, Monday April 27, on the following streets in Sydney: 

- Christopher Cres. from Cottage Rd. heading west to civic #83

- Webster St. from Victoria Rd. to Bay St. 

Roadwork will also begin on Monday, April 27, on the following streets in New Waterford:  

- Warren Ave., New Waterford from Gibbon St. to the railroad tracks

- Brook Ave, New Waterford, from Bay Ave to Irish Brook Rd.  

Traffic control will be in place throughout the duration of these projects.

COVID-19 protocols must be respected on all construction sites.

Residents are asked to not approach the workers and follow all social distance guidelines. 

Solid Waste facility re-opening on Tuesday, April 28, the Waste Management Facility located on SPAR Road in Sydney will re-open to the public and resume the regular operating hours of Tuesday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Overnight fires in CBRM

March 29, 2020

One person has died and about 50 people have been displaced following two major fires in the CBRM overnight. 

In New Waterford, a fire at seniors’ apartment complex resulted in the loss of one life and has displaced approximately 30 residents.The fire was contained but New Waterford’s Volunteer Fire Department remains on the scene. At this time, it is not clear how extensive the damage is and how long before the residents will be able to return.

On Charlotte Street in Sydney, 11 people lost their homes when a fire resulted in one building being torn down. No injuries have been reported.

That fire caused another 11 people to be temporarily displaced from their dwellings over the Subway restaurant next door.

Municipality pauses on overdue accounts

SYDNEY, NS – Cape Breton Regional Municipality will not be taking action on overdue tax and water bills for at least 90 days.

 “We understand that many taxpayers are concerned about the future, about employment insecurity and the ability to pay their tax and water bills,” said Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Campbell. 

“For the next 90 days, CBRM is deferring tax sale procedure and disconnection of water utility customers for nonpayment,” said Campbell. 

“Any further deferral will be reassessed in June. We are also committed to being flexible, extending payment due dates, and providing options for residential and small business customers affected by protection measures undertaken by the Province of Nova Scotia.”

Cape Breton Transit *Schedule changes*

Cape Breton Transit continues to operate this week, however, seating is limited and schedules have been reduced.  

Please be advised Saturday service is limited and Sunday service is cancelled until further notice. Updated schedules can be found at www.cbrm.ns.ca/coronavirus and at https://www.facebook.com/CBRMgov

Modifications to seating capacity have been put in place to keep drivers and patrons a safe distance apart. CBRM respectfuly asks residents to avoid all non-essential travel to keep seats available for those who need it. 

HandiTrans will continue to operate by appointment booking.  Clients are asked to limit requests to essential trips only inlcuding medical appointments, grocery needs, and prescription pick up.
