Cape Breton Regional Municipality youth council seeks members and ideas

SYDNEY, NS – With a budget of $25,000 and a lot of new ideas and enthusiasm, the CBRM Youth Council is up and running.

"All youth between 14 and 18 are encouraged to join and be part of the decision-making about what we want to achieve and how we spend the budget," said Marianne Toomey, a Grade 12 student at Glace Bay High School.

CBMIC & CBRM Recreation Present 'Discovery Stage'

SYDNEY, NS - A concert event will be held in April to showcase emerging local musical talent. The Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative (CBMIC - pronounced CB mike) and Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Recreation today launched the 'Discovery Stage', a concert event set for Friday, April 17th, at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay.

Dates announced for public budget meetings across CBRM

SYDNEY, NS – Residents of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are welcome to participate in budget consultation meetings as part of the municipality's 2015-16 budget process.

Meetings begin in Sydney Mines and North Sydney on Sunday, February 1 and finish in Sydney on February 24.

There will be a public meeting held in each of the 12 districts. Mayor Cecil Clarke and each district's councillor will attend the meetings along with key CBRM staff.

Mayor and Council welcome WestJet “Encore” service to Sydney

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Cecil Clarke said he welcomes WestJet's announcement today of an Atlantic Canada expansion.

As part of WestJet's Atlantic Canada expansion, a daily flight between Sydney and Halifax will offer an introductory one way fare of $119 and a return fare of $239. WestJet's Bombardier Q400 planes seat over 70 passengers. This new flight is in addition to the airline's seasonal jet service to Sydney.

"Affordable air transport to and from Cape Breton is an economic necessity. Realistic airfares can make Cape Breton more competitive when it comes to conventions, special events and tourism overall," said Clarke. "This new daily flight to Halifax is a big step forward for our region and strengthens Sydney's connection to the WestJet network."

Mayor's year in review report

As we enter the third year of our mandate, we can look back at two distinct phases. The first full year, 2013, was the beginning of the positive change plan. That included holding a port summit, establishing a five-year capital plan and budget consultation tours.

Residents clearly said job creation, working with other levels of government and port development are top priorities for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

This past year was a shoulder-to-the-wheel year. Significant effort has gone into the top priorities, including promoting the Port of Sydney. We are now seeing positive outcomes.

New CBRM councillor to be sworn in tonight

SYDNEY, NS - New District 10 Councillor Darrell Flynn will swear an oath before council meets tonight at City Hall.

Tonight's regular council meeting begins at 6:00 pm. Justice Ken Haley will administer the oath.

Moderate voter turnout on first day of e-voting

District 10 special elections

CBRM Election Officials have reported that approximately 335 people have gone online or on the telephone to cast ballots during the first day of advance voting for the CBRM Special Elections for Councillor and School Board Member in District 10.

The Returning Office reports that in the 23 hours the polls have been open, approximately 4.6% of the total eligible voters have embraced the e-voting technology.

District boundary review prior to next CBRM election in 2016

November 13, 2014

CBRM has been instructed by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to conduct a review of its electoral districts to ensure the principal of equal representation will be adhered for the 2016 municipal election. A report from the CBRM must be submitted to the Board by the end of the 2014 calendar year.
