Work to begin on $58 million public works project in Westmount area

SYDNEY, NS – Tendering for engineering is about to begin for two major wastewater projects in Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

“We have reached an understanding and agreement with the provincial government in regards to wastewater project funding,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke. “We understand the project can now proceed without disqualifying us from applying for additional infrastructure funding for roads and facilities.”

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Government of Nova Scotia and Government of Canada are equally cost sharing a $58 million project to install a new collection system and treatment plant on the Westmount side of Sydney Harbour. When the project is complete, wastewater from 7,000 residents will be fully treated prior to being released into Sydney Harbour. Wastewater is a broad term to describe any water impacted by human activity, including sewage and drainage from stormwater systems.

Neighbourhood Watch meeting to be held in Westmount

A preliminary community meeting for public information on the Neighbourhood Watch program will be held in Westmount on October 29, 2017.

The Cape Breton Regional Police Service will be on hand to explain the program details, informing citizens of the crime prevention measures they can take to help keep them and their neighbours safe.

CBRM Youth Council to resume on October 17

October 11, 2017

SYDNEY, NS – The CBRM Youth Council is holding its first meeting of the school year. Youth aged 14-18 who are interested in making a positive impact in the community are encouraged to attend the first meeting and join the Council.T

he CBRM Youth Council challenges young citizens to develop ideas and play a role in shaping the future of the CBRM. It also provides opportunities for youth to embrace their leadership and decision-making skills, while engaging with peers and community members.

The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 4:30 pm in the Second Floor Boardroom at City Hall, located at 320 Esplanade, Sydney.

Section of George Street closed tomorrow, October 4

A section of George Street in Sydney, between Glenwood Street and Brookland Street, will be closed to traffic tomorrow, October 4th, for sewer system repairs.

Work will start at 8am, expected to last the entire day. Traffic signage will be in place, with detoured traffic directed along Glenwood Street and Brookland Street. Access will be provided for local traffic via the Glenwood Street side of the closure.

Section of Pond Road in Florence closed to traffic today

Due to emergency waterline repairs, a section of Pond Road, near LeBlanc Road in Florence will be closed to traffic today, September 29, 2017. Estimated that the section will remain closed for the remainder of the day.  

Traffic signage will be in place. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes.

Construction on Esplanade in Sydney starting September 28

As part of Tender T38-2017, a waterline replacement and asphalt resurfacing will be taking place on the Esplanade in Sydney, between Desbarres Street and Dorchester Street, and is estimated to take approximately 10 weeks to complete. 

The first phase of this project, between Desbarres Street and Amelia Street will begin Thursday, September 28th, 2017.

Line painting will be taking place on Kings Rd in Sydney

One outbound lane closure on section of Kings Road in Sydney tomorrow, Friday, Sept 22

September 21, 2017 

One outbound lane on Kings Road, between Logue Drive and Weidner Drive in Sydney, will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 22nd due to asphalt repairs.  

Work will begin at 7 a.m., expected to finish up by mid afternoon. Through traffic will still be permitted in one outbound lane; traffic control will be in place.
