CBRM urges thorough and definitive review of Miller case

SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is encouraging the provincial Justice Minister to conduct a complete and thorough review of the 1990 death of New Waterford teenager Clayton Miller.

Mayor Clarke wrote to Provincial Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lena Diab and expressed support of the review she announced in September.

"The full scope of the Medical Examiner's office needs to be brought to bear on this matter," said Mayor Clarke in his letter. "The Chief Medical Examiner, Doctor Matt Bowes, must examine all of the previous work that was done and provide as definitive a conclusion as possible."

Is your Curbside Collection Day Monday?

This REMINDER is for you!

The CBRM Solid Waste Department wishes to remind residents, who receive curbside collection each Monday, of an important CHANGE to their Curbside Collection Day. Beginning in October, Garbage, Green Carts and Blue Bag materials will now be collected on Saturdays. This permanent change will start on Saturday, October 4, 2014.

Your New Curbside Collection Day if you were collected on Mondays:
•Your Garbage and Green Cart will now be collected each week on Saturday.
•Your blue bag week rotation will remain the same but, collected on Saturday.

A notice has been distributed to the areas affected by the Collection Day change. Please phone the Waste Management Hotline if you did not receive a copy of your area's new Curbside Collection Schedule.

For more information on this important Collection Day Change, please phone the Waste Management Hotline 902- 567-1337. Educators are available to respond to inquiries from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality council hires new CAO

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality's new CAO is returning to his Cape Breton roots.

Michael Merritt, 54, an Assistant Deputy Minister in Alberta's Department of Municipal Affairs, was born and raised in Victoria Mines. Today, he became the first Chief Administrative Officer hired by CBRM council as per their duty under the Municipal Government Act.

Major road projects still awaiting funding

Road building season in jeopardy: Clarke

SYDNEY, NS - Residents in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are seeing road work underway on smaller side streets while major work on main roads has yet to be started.

CBRM is seeking to invest $9 million in cost shared funding on heavy traffic roads. The projects are to be equally cost shared, at one-third each, between the municipality, federal government and provincial government. The funding is administered by the province and has not yet been approved.

Mayor Cecil Clarke says this delay is putting the 2014 road construction season in jeopardy.

Tropical Storm Arthur in the CBRM

SYDNEY, NS - CBRM Emergency Management team received the latest briefing from Environment Canada this afternoon and current indications are that CBRM can expect a total of 30mm of rain and wind gust to 90km per hour. The main storm event is expected to pass over CBRM throughout the afternoon and evening on Saturday July 5, 2014.

CBRM Prepares for Hurricane Arthur

SYDNEY, NS - CBRM emergency officials received a briefing from the Canadian Hurricane Center this afternoon regarding the possible threats from Hurricane Arthur.

Current projected track of Hurricane Arthur will bring significant wind to the CBRM, with gusts from 70 - 100km throughout the day on Saturday. At this time, rainfall amounts are not expected to be extreme, but significant rainfall is expected.

CBRM Council welcomes news of pedestrian and cycle overpass

June 18, 2014

SYDNEY, NS - Cyclists and pedestrians will have a safer path through one of Sydney's busiest intersections.

The provincial government has confirmed they will construct an overpass over the 125 highway to connect downtown Sydney and the Grand Lake Road multi-use trail at the Mayflower Mall. The overpass is part of the municipality's Active Transportation Plan, but its future was in doubt as the province was opposed to constructing it.
