Transit Cape Breton Notice

Transit Cape Breton would like to inform citizens of a temporary change to Route #1 in Dominion. Route #1 bus stops in Dominion have temporarily been rerouted from Commercial St. to Station St. due to the current construction underway on Commercial St. This reroute will remain in place until further notice. Transit Cape Breton apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

Transit Cape Breton offers several summer promotions

SYDNEY, NS – A special bus route to the Fortress of Louisbourg is now in operation. The Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Transit Cape Breton, in partnership with Parks Canada are pleased to offer citizens a free bus to and from the Fortress, five days a week until September 4, 2017.

The bus to the Fortress of Louisbourg departs Dorchester St. in Sydney twice daily at 8:05 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The bus will also depart The Parks Canada Visitor Centre, Fortress of Louisbourg back to Dorchester St. at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on those days.  This bus is free to everyone with their 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Pass.

Special transit service available on Canada Day

Sydney, NS - Transit Cape Breton will be up and running with a special Canada Day service on Saturday, July 1, 2017. Transit Cape Breton is pleased to offer citizens with 5 operating routes along with a special Canada Day route to Petersfield Park in Westmount.

As part of the Canada Day service Route 1 (Sydney - Glace Bay), Route 5 (Sydney - Sydney Mines), Route 8 (Whitney Pier), Route 9 (Sydney - New Waterford) and Route 10-13 (George St./Alexandra St.) will all offer daytime service beginning at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m.

Sydney regeneration project to hold open house

SYDNEY, NS – The Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Sydney Waterfront District Association and the National Trust for Canada invite residents to join them for an open house this Saturday, May 27. The open house will be held at 15 Prince Street, bottom floor of the former Smart Shop Place, from 1 p.m to 4 p.m.

The municipality, Sydney Waterfront District and National Trust for Canada have joined forces for the implementation of a Main Street Regeneration initiative for the Sydney Waterfront District. Over the next two years they will be working with residents and the local business community on projects that have significant economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits.

Upgrades to water system infrastructure in Dominion

April 25, 2017

The CBRM Water Utility is advising residents in the Dominion area that a section of the water main on Mitchell Avenue (between Railroad Street and Commercial Street) has been shut down and will remain shut down until tomorrow afternoon due to an upgrade to the water system infrastructure.

Residents in this area may experience reduced or low water pressure until the work is complete.

Service is expected to be fully restored on Wednesday, April 26 at approximately 5 p.m.

Updates will be provided when available.

Road work update: Partial road closures begin next week

April 21, 2017

SYDNEY, NS - The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is announcing its first road work street closures of the construction season.

Starting on Monday, April 24, sections of Commercial Street and Royal Avenue in Dominion will be down to one lane for a waterline replacement project. The project is expected to continue through the spring and into the summer months. Traffic will be stop and go in the construction zone, however detours to traffic flow may also occur from time to time. Work is also slated to begin at Inglis Street in Sydney from Union Street to High Street for a waterline upgrade and road rebuild. Work on Hare Street in North Sydney is expected to begin on Tuesday with a waterline and road rebuild project.

This past September, Mayor Cecil Clarke outlined a $16 million project for improvements to the municipality’s water and wastewater systems. The project represents 14,400 days of employment for workers at over 40 sites.

Residential Heavy Garbage Scheduled for May 1, 2017

The CBRM Solid Waste Department’s Residential Heavy Garbage collection has been scheduled for Monday, May 1, 2017. Residents who live at properties eligible for curbside collection must have their large, heavy or bulky materials curbside no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1.

To review the guidelines for Heavy Garbage Collection, residents are encouraged to visit CBRM’s website at www.cbrm.ns.ca or phone the Waste Management Hotline at (902) 567-1337. Educators are available to answer questions from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

“It’s important to remember residents must have their heavy garbage materials placed curbside for this collection no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1, as streets will only be visited once,” says Francis Campbell, Solid Waste Manager. “I encourage residents who have questions about heavy garbage, to contact the Waste Management Hotline”.

Michael Merritt to resign as CBRM CAO

March 31, 2017

Mayor Cecil Clarke and members of the CBRM Council received notice today of the resignation of Chief Administrative Officer Michael Merritt, who after almost three years of dedicated service will be leaving to return to his family in Alberta.

“I am truly thankful for my opportunity to work with Mayor Clarke and the CBRM Council, as we worked to improve the quality of life of the residents of CBRM,” said Merritt. “I would also like to thank my staff for their dedication, professionalism and support during my tenure as CAO.”
