Major concert event at Centre200 to raise funds for Fort Mac

SYDNEY, NS - CBRM’s Centre 200 in Sydney will be the site of a major concert event in support of Fort McMurray relief efforts. Cape Breton artists Matt Minglewood and the Barra MacNeils are in the lineup for the May 15 event. Further acts to be announced shortly. Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison will be the host and MC.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday, May 10. General admission $20. Tickets available Centre 200 box office and Savoy.

Board of Police Commissioners welcomes new citizen appointees

March 2, 2016

Sydney, NS – Three citizens of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality were appointed to the CBRM Board of Police Commissioners by Council during the February 16, 2016 meeting.

Nadine Bernard of Sydney, Joe Meaney of North Sydney and Emerson Duff of Glace Bay have accepted their positions for a two-year term. The first meeting of the new commission is Thursday, March 3, 2016.

Citizens are invited to first Port of Sydney annual general meeting

SYDNEY, NS - The first Port of Sydney annual general meeting will be held at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion on Saturday, March 12. The event begins with an open house information session from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a business meeting featuring financial statements.

Topics presented at the open house include: cruise activity projections and updates on the second berth project to expand Sydney’s Cruise Terminal to accommodate up to three cruise ships at one time. Our region’s proposal for designation as a Foreign Trade Zone will be presented as well as information on the marketing and development of a proposed deep-water container terminal at the Port of Sydney.

Sydney, NS — Cape Breton’s new community-based initiative that brings art to empty storefronts and spaces in the CBRM, is now accepting artist proposals for the second term. Jumping off of the overwhelming success of the Lumiere Festival, which brings thousands of residents and visitors into the downtown core for one amazing art-filled night annually, we are hoping to continue the attraction, on a smaller scale, throughout the year.

Councillor Charlie Keagan mourned by council and CBRM colleagues

Tonight's council meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality's council are mourning the loss of their colleague Charlie Keagan. Keagan suffered a heart attack recently and further complications this morning led to his passing at around 2:00 pm.

"We are very saddened by the loss of our council colleague," said Mayor Cecil Clarke. "Charlie was a grassroots, community-focused leader who devoted many years of his life to public service. His wisdom and strength of character will be greatly missed."

Out of respect for Councillor Keagan, council will postpone tonight's scheduled meeting to a later date. Flags at city hall are being lowered to half-mast.

Public are invited to annual Mayor’s New Year’s Levee

January 3, 2016

SYDNEY, NS - Mayor Cecil Clarke and Lt.-Col. Russell Gallant are again co-hosting a New Year’s Levee at the Sydney Garrison, Victoria Park. The event will take place on Saturday, January 9th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This is an accessible event for all ages. Members of the Sydney Garrison are on hand to help with parking and access to the venue.

Last year’s event attracted hundreds who came to start the new year by keeping in touch with fellow residents, municipal and military officials. The event features live music and complimentary food and beverages.

Budget meetings in November (FULL SCHEDULE)

Mayor and Council to provide update on development initiatives

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s Mayor and Council are hosting budget meetings in November to begin planning for the 2016-17 budget. All residents are encouraged to attend.

Meetings are held in each of the 12 districts and are attended by Mayor Cecil Clarke, the local councillor and senior CBRM staff. This year’s meetings will begin with an update on economic development, downtown development initiatives and community improvement efforts.

The Department of Municipal Affairs is working with the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities and the Association of Municipal Administrators to carry out the review of the Municipal Governement Act (MGA) over the next three years.  We are asking those in the CBRM who wish to comment or offer suggestions on improving the MGA go to the following link and offer your opinions
