Beginning October 1, eligible homeowners in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) who need a smoke alarm but cannot afford one can apply to receive free smoke alarms for their homes. Firefighters from local fire departments will install the smoke alarms free of charge and provide fire safety information during their visit.
The program returns as CBRM recognizes Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, an annual opportunity to remind residents about simple steps they can take to prevent fires and stay safe at home.
“A working smoke alarm provides an important early warning during a fire,” said Cecil Clarke, Mayor of Cape Breton Regional Municipality. “The value of the program goes beyond providing a smoke alarm. It helps us reach residents who may need a little extra support, while giving our firefighters an opportunity to connect with people in the community and have conversations about fire safety.”
The program was first offered in CBRM in October 2025, providing 258 smoke alarms across 30 communities in the municipality.
Applications for the 2026 program open on October 1 and will be accepted until October 31, or while supplies last.
To help the program reach as many residents as possible, one smoke alarm is provided per floor with bedrooms. For example, if bedrooms are on two different floors, an alarm will be provided for each of those floors.
Residents who already have smoke alarms are also encouraged to take time during Fire Prevention Week to test them and make sure everyone in the home can hear the alarm. Working smoke alarms save lives.
Homeowners can apply through the Smoke Alarm Installation Program online request form or call 311 for assistance. The fire prevention officers will contact applicants if they are eligible.
