NOTICE: Work will require a temporary shutdown of the Reserve Street and South Street wastewater lift (pumping) stations that is not expected to last more than 48 hours. During the shutdown, untreated wastewater will be discharged through the existing emergency overflow pipes adjacent to the pumping stations. The dates for the bypasses are planned to be October 5-6 at Reserve Street and October 6- 7 at South Street. A window of October 5– 16 is requested for the work to be completed in case there are delays or bad weather. The bypass can begin at any time within that window, but once the work begins, the period of release of untreated wastewater cannot exceed 48 hours.
Public Notice – Notice of Wastewater Bypass – Glace Bay
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) has applied to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for Temporary Bypass Authorizations associated with final upgrade work to the Reserve Lift Station and South Street Lift Station as part of the Glace Bay Wastewater Collection and Treatment Project.
These wastewater pumping stations are located on Reserve Street and at the end of South Street, respectively. The photos below show the discharge locations.
The Glace Bay Wastewater Collection and Treatment Project is an approximately $85 million infrastructure project designed to improve wastewater collection and provide wastewater treatment to Glace Bay. The project includes construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and upgrades to wastewater collection and pumping infrastructure.
This work will require a temporary shutdown of the Reserve Street and South Street wastewater lift (pumping) stations that is not expected to last more than 48 hours. During the shutdown, untreated wastewater will be discharged through the existing emergency overflow pipes adjacent to the pumping stations.
This temporary discharge is necessary to complete work associated with the new wastewater treatment system. Once the Glace Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant is operational, wastewater that has historically been discharged untreated to the ocean will now be treated before discharge. Residents are urged to avoid activities involving direct contact with the water near the temporary discharge locations.
The timing of this work remains subject to regulatory approval and CBRM will provide updates to the public regarding the exact timing of the shutdowns.
