Medical Exemption Program

The Solid Waste Department provides a medical exemption to households who use more than one dark garbage bag per week due to medical reasons. The use of additional dark bags is for materials related to medical condition only. Any additional garbage unrelated to the medical issue must be disposed of in clear garbage bags.

To qualify for a medical exemption the residents must recycle and use their assigned green cart. An 8-week curbside assessment completed by the collectors occurs before approval occurs.
While the curbside assessment is underway, you are permitted to use additional dark bags. This is communicated to the collector to ensure the household’s extra dark bags used for medical waste is removed from the curb.
Medical Exemption Stickers are provided if the civic address is approved for a medical exemption.
